From Málaga airport to Álora
Short answer: pick up a rental car at AGP, drive 45 minutes on a quiet road, and you're here. Details below, plus alternatives if you'd rather not drive after a long flight.
My advice: rent at AGP
For staying in the Guadalhorce valley a rental car is essentially indispensable. Caminito del Rey, El Chorro, the white villages, restaurants in the hills: public transport doesn't cover it. Book ahead so your car is waiting when you land.
Which company
- Sixt: consistently reliable, a touch more expensive. No surprises.
- OK Mobility: good prices, newer cars, good reviews at AGP.
- Centauro: average on service, fine.
- Goldcar: cheapest price, but the desk often pushes "exclusive" coverage. Read the terms.
Book full insurance in advance. It barely changes the price and avoids a sales pitch at the counter. Book two to three weeks ahead, in high season earlier.
The route
- You land at Málaga-Costa del Sol, Terminal 3.
- Follow signs for "Rental Cars". Desks are on the first floor (lift from the baggage area).
- Leave AGP on the A-7 north (towards Algeciras), take exit 231 A-357 towards Cártama.
- Follow the A-357 through the Guadalhorce valley. Quiet two-lane road, river on the right, light traffic.
- After about 25 minutes you'll see signs for Pizarra and Álora.
- At Álora follow local signs to the finca. I'll send a Google Maps link in advance.
Allow 45 minutes in normal traffic. In rush hour on the Málaga ring road it can stretch close to an hour. Try to avoid Friday evening, especially in summer.
Alternative: train (Renfe Cercanías C-2)
Don't want a car? This works:
- AGP to Málaga María Zambrano (train, 12 min, about €3).
- Change for Cercanías C-2 towards Álora (45 min, €3.80).
- Short taxi from Álora station to the finca (about 10 min, €15-20).
Pros: cheaper, no driving stress. Cons: without a car you depend on taxis for excursions, and on Sundays and holidays trains run less often.
Alternative: taxi or pre-booked transfer
If you land late or don't want to drive, book a transfer ahead. Around €70 to €90 one way. Welcompickup.com and HolaTransfers are popular for pre-bookings. For a family with a lot of luggage sometimes the calmest option, certainly for the first trip.
What you can see along the way
If you have time, a few small stops:
- Cártama: a white village along the A-357, fine for a quick coffee.
- Mirador de los Frailes: a viewpoint over the valley. Worth a photo stop.
- Bodega: a few small wineries nearby where you can pick up a box of Moscatel.
Practical on arrival
- Fill up at a big station in Cártama before heading into the hills. In Álora itself stations are smaller and more expensive.
- Mobile signal is good almost everywhere; in some hill spots it drops briefly.
- Groceries: Mercadona or Lidl in Pizarra (15 minutes from Álora) is cheaper and broader than the small shops in the village.
